Sangnier, Marc
(1873-1950)
   journalist, political figure
   Born in Paris, Marc Sangnier was the founder of the social and religious movement known as Le Sillon, which sought to reconcile Christian values with the republic and with social democracy. its ideas were expressed especially in L'Éveil démocratique (1904). Condemned by Pope Pius X (1910), Sangnier submitted to Rome and founded a new newspaper, La Démocratie, then the Jeune République movement (1912). As a deputy (1919-24), he struggled for peace and against racism, and created the Ligue française des auberges de juenesses (1930). The Jeune République merged with the MRP after the Liberation.
